Softly à la belle province
With tremulous refrain
Tomes underneath each arm
Lorca & King James
From last lament of Joan of Arc
to quiet servitude
From the wars against disorder
To suggest or allude
that it's not long Marianne, I shall see you soon
The highways are empty now
in New York and Berlin
yearning sound from synagogues
beckon from within
Suzy yells “it's closing time.
The wait staff are all vexed.
I wish you could sing one more song.
Of love, or faith or sex."
But it's not too long, Marianne. We shall see you soon
I hope you passed near a forest
somewhere near your pen
I hope you passed in loving arms
with letters from your friends
I swore I heard them singing
all the way from Clinton Street
I know they'll lock the Chelsea now
Drop the keys at your feet
It's not long Marianne, I shall see you soon

Song For Kathleen

A song for Kathleen
who looked at me funny today
song for Kathleen
who waved once and then turned away
I guess she didn't recognize
the hope. My mild surprise
A song for Kathleen
who got up to wait for a bus
a song for Kathleen
who never once thought about us
I guess one day I'll wave again
I know we could be friends
I guess she didn't recognize
the look that filled my eyes

Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago we drank a lot
My friends and I drank plenty
I couldn’t say the bills we paid
I only know that there were many
Ten years ago we laughed a lot
And sacred was no topic
A normal day we’d laugh away
And friend nor foe could stop it
Ten years ago we sang a lot
Our songs were loud and unforgiving
Our words spoke true as though brand new
And sung without misgivings
Ten years ago I thought we knew
The secrets of life’s meanings
Or did we care? I do despair
That we didn’t take much heeding

The Tourists

Me and my friends went to New York
we spent a weekend in Bushwick
The price was kinda steep, but oh well, we're in New York
On the first day we saw a cockroach
jumped up and scurried across the hardwood
and we all kinda laughed and said oh well, we're in New York
We saw a rat down in the subway
it looked up at my with indifference
as if to say, what's your problem? You're in new York.
The rat got off at 23rd street
we stayed on until Rockerfeller
The people pushed, said get out of the way, you're in New York
On a worn out bench
I stop to take in the racket
Until a lit cigarette,
burned a hole in my jacket
We brought home bedbugs from New York
we got a message from Lauren who said
she had bites up and down, she could barely close her left hand
I found a couple in my queen bed
they were hopping around, they were laughing in my face
after I crushed them and flushed them i said “Go back to New York”....
I’ve all my regrets
And I may find Solutions
In these tall silhouettes
And noise pollution
